Julius (Tubby) Simonini was the sixth man on Dundee's 1938 Boys Basketball state championship team but was better known after high school for his abilities in baseball. He was a member of the 1939 Algonquin American Legion team that was state runner-up. He signed a professional contract with the Chicago White Sox and pitched in the minor leagues in a career interrupted by World War II. He was an area scout for the White Sox for twenty years.

The Village of Algonquin named the baseball field in Towne Park for Tubby in 1999. He passed away on December 22, 2003.
