In 1952 Bob's story became nationally known because he was featured in an article in SPORT Magazine as "High School Hero". The six-page coverage resulted in him becoming the athletic hero of the basketball-crazy population of Algonquin, Carpentersville and Dundee. SPORT Magazine was the nation's leading sports-interest magazine for generations.

Bob's father passed away when Bob was 14 years old and he helped his mother raise his younger brother and sister. Later he served in the U.S. Army and was a career employee of Illinois Bell Telephone. Bob, a life-long resident of Dundee died in 2000.
