Joe graduated from DCHS in 1965 after a distinguished football and basketball career playing for Coach John Timmerman and Coach John Paul. He earned 2 varsity letters in football as an offensive end, defensive safety and punter. He was selected as MVP along with Tom Garner, outstanding defensive linebacker. In basketball he earned 2 varsity letters. As a junior he was the 6th man and as a senior was voted as captain and led the 1964-1965 basketball team to the North Suburban Championship eventually succumbing to Elgin High School in the regional final in one of the most bizarre games ever. All five Dundee starters fouled out.

Joe then went to Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa where he went on to letter 3 years in football and 3 years in basketball. He had an outstanding football career setting several records for passes caught in a game, a season, a career and touchdown passes caught in a career. In 1968, he earned Little All-American honors as an offensive end and several regional football awards as a defensive safety. He was selected captain and voted MVP in both his Junior and Senior years. Since graduating, Joe was selected to the Cornell College Hall of Fame and to Cornell's All Century Football Team. Joe has been a strong supporter of athletics on all levels.

After graduation, Joe taught French and coached in the Davenport, Iowa school system. He was a football assistant coach at Davenport Central High School under the legendary Iowa Hall of Fame Coach Jim Fox and assistant basketball coach under Head Coach, Don Grensing. Davenport Central won the Iowa State Basketball Championship in 1970.

During the 1969 and 1970 seasons, Joe played wide receiver and punter for the Quad City Mohawks out of Rock Island, Illinois.

He coached at Western Illinois University in 1974 overseeing the wide receivers and punters. From 1975-77, he coached receivers, punters, and defensive backs at Cornell College . In 1977-1978, he became the head football coach, women's basketball coach and men's track coach at Knox College in Galesburg. In the summers from 1982-1985, he was the Camp Field Director for the Pat Dye Kicking Camp at Auburn University. Then in 1985, Joe became the Director of Athletics for the Galesburg School District and oversaw 10 boys and 10 girls high school sports along with junior high programs.

Joe currently works as a financial service agent at AW Welt Ambrisco Insurance, Inc. of Iowa City, Iowa. He also served as a director on the Board of Directors for the Visiting Nurses Association of Iowa City, and Elder Services, Inc. of Iowa City.
