Morningstar, a 1971 Dundee High School graduate, was an All-Conference and honorable Mention All-State basketball player at Dundee before playing at Olney Central College, where he was a Junior College All-American, and later at Kansas where he helped the Jayhawks to a pair of NCAA Tournament berths -- including a Final Four appearance in 1974.

In 1975, Morningstar was drafted by Boston and finished his professional career in Europe. Morningstar is an inductee of the Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame.
