Bernhard is a 1976 Irving Crown graduate who earned eight varsity letters in football, basketball and track. He was a special mention all-state selection in basketball before going on to play all three sports at Yale University. In football at Yale, Bernhard was the starting tight end on two Ivy League championship teams.
