A 1988 Dundee-Crown High School graduate. Drafted by the Colorado Rockies while pitching at Parkland Community College. Pitched in the major leagues from 1995-2003 for Colorado, New York Mets, St. Louis, Milwaukee, Florida, Detroit, New York Yankees and Toronto.

He finished his MLB career with a 4.33 ERA and a 28–40 win–loss record. When he retired from Major League baseball, his 28 saves in a season for Detroit in 2002 was a record for a Mexican-born pitcher. He retired after the 2003 season.
