A 1990 graduate of Dundee-Crown High School, Chad was a two-sport athlete who excelled at football and basketball. In 1989, Chad's senior year, he earned Fox Valley All-Conference, Courier News All-Area and Second Team All-State Honors in football.

Chad went to the University of Illinois and led the nation in several defensive categories. After college, Chad played in the Arena League. He played for the St. Louis Stampede (1996) and Texas Terror (1997).
